Senior clerical officer charged with receiving Kshs2500 bribe to issue a birth certificate

A senior clerical officer at the civil litigation department in the office of the Attorney General has been charged with receiving a bribe of Ksh2500 from a Kenyan seeking a birth certificate.

Ya’qub Abubakar Omar, who was charged at Mililani Law Courts, is said to have requested a financial benefit of Ksh2500 from Calistus Walunda in consequence that he would release a birth certificate of his daughter.

The incident happened on September 10th, 2019.

Abubakar was charged with two counts of demanding and receiving a bribe contrary to the law.

The said bribe is said to have been handed to Abubakar along Aga khan walk within Nairobi.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges before Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti.

His lawyer pleaded for a lenient bail terms saying the accused is not a flight risk. 

The court granted him a cash bail of Sh100,000 or a Bond of Sh500,000.
