Several Feared Dead After Fuel Tanker Explodes in Kakamega County (Video)

An unknown number of people are feared dead after a fuel tanker exploded, causing an inferno in Kakamega County.

Going by the reports from eyewitnesses, the tanker collided head-on with another vehicle before bursting into flames.

Rescuers from the Red Cross, County Fire Brigade, and the police had been deployed to the Muhonje area to save lives and establish the cause of the accident.

“Reports of a fuel tanker explosion at Muhonje in Kakamega. Red Cross Action Team Kakamega, Emergency Medical Services, police and County Fire Brigade are responding,” the Red Cross said.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that security personnel had cautioned those at the accident scene to keep off.

“We wish to notify the public of a road traffic accident involving a petrol tanker, which has burst into flames at Mukhonje area, near Lwandedi, along the Webuye-Eldoret road.

“Our officers are at the scene. We urge motorists and onlookers to exercise caution. The number of casualties as a result of the accident is yet to be established,” the NPS said.
