The authorities at the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reported that six people have been confirmed dead following a suicide bomb attack on a crowded restaurant in the Eastern city of Beni on Christmas day.

A police statement indicated that the suicide bomber was prevented from entering the building, and he ended up blowing himself up at the entrance, killing himself and five other people. Thirteen people sustained injuries during the incident.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the bombard, but the officials suspect that the attack was sponsored by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which is a terror group linked to Islamic State (IS) or Daesh.

According to witnesses, more than thirty people were celebrating Christmas in the restaurant when the bomb went off.

“I was sitting there,” local radio presenter Nicolas Ekila told AFP.

“There was a motorbike parked there. Suddenly the motorbike took off, then there was a deafening noise.” He added.

After the explosion, military officers guarding the area instructed the lucky people who survived the attack to head to their homes for their safety.

Earlier in November, the Congolese and Ugandan forces had joined arms to counter the brutal attacks conducted by ADF in the East. Ugandan forces accused ADF of attacking Kampala in October.

The Islamist militant, ADF, was formed in Uganda in the 1990s but is now based in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since pledging allegiance to IS in 2019, it has increasingly carried out attacks in the group’s name.
