Trans Mara Sugar Company in Narok County has come under fire after two employees perished in strange circumstances.
Patrick Okero and Duke Mong’are were swept away by an avalanche of waste on February 25.
The CCTV captured the duo being buried alive. Another worker escaped death by a whisker.
What has, however, caused an uproar is that the factory continues with normal operations as if nothing happened.
The firm is also yet to issue a statement about the deaths.
Area Deputy County Commissioner Mohamed Noor said the matter was under investigation.
“I have requested the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to open an inquiry file and investigate if there is criminal negligence by the management. If they are found culpable, they should be held accountable,” he said.
Until now, the bodies are the two are yet to be retrieved despite the National Environmental Complaints Commission giving a seven-day notice.
The commission’s chairman Lumumba Nyaberi said they could ask the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) to shut down the factory.
“The multi-agency committee is meeting at the factory this week to decide the way forward,” he said.
Two days ago, Barabu MP Ben Momanyi stormed the company and demanded answers. Mong’are hails from his constituency in Kisii County.
“It is disheartening that the bodies of two are yet to be retrieved nearly a month after they were buried alive. The two families are in agony. This want closure on this issue and I am asking the national government to intervene,” the lawmaker said, adding that the National Disaster Management Unit had failed on its job.
