Shujaa chasing their sixth title at the Rugby Africa Sevens in Kampala

The national rugby Sevens team Shujaa beat their continental arch-rivals Nambia 33-7 to qualify for the semifinals of the 2022 Rugby Africa Sevens tournament being staged in Kampala, Uganda.

Kenya who take on Madagascar on Sunday morning at 10:06am had earlier on began their Pool A fixtures after rallying from behind with a hard fought 24-19 victory over Zimbabwe at the Kyadondo Rugby Club.

They raced to 7-0 lead when Tony Omondi converted Billy Odhiambo’s try. Zimbabwe responded with three tries, two of them after Shujaa lost Tony Omondi to the sin bin.

With the scores at 19-7 to Zimbabwe deep in the second half, Omondi would then convert Bush Mwale’s try for a 19-14 score before further tries from Alvin Otieno and Daniel Taabu won it for Kenya who next play Namibia.

Shujaa qualified for the championship round after defeating Senegal 19-0 in their seeding match

After a slow start, it was Herman Humwa who scored the opening try with Tony Omondi converting for 7-0 lead at the interval.

He then converted one of Bush Mwale’s two second half tries to secure the result.

The winners of the seeding matches as well as the best loser will proceed to the championship category which consists of two groups made up of four teams each.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals.

Shujaa is chasing their sixth title as other nations jostle for Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens spots.

Fourteen countries are taking part in the annual tournament with the best placed Commonwealth team securing a ticket to the Club Games due on June 28 to August 8 in the English city.

The gold, silver and bronze medallists will join South Africa and Kenya as the continent’s representatives to this year’s Rugby World Cup Sevens that will be held in Cape Town from September 9 to 11.
