Democratic Party Presidential candidate Justin Muturi says Mt Kenya shouldn’t bank their political fortunes in Azimio or Kenya Kwanza but should instead rally behind a party of their own.
Muturi, who is also the Speaker of the National Assembly, said once the General Election is over, the two big coalitions could enter into a pact leaving the region with no party to represent them.
He said he was worried by the recent endorsement of Raila Odinga as the Azimio candidate, by President Uhuru Kenyatta who urged Raila not not to forget Mt Kenya if he wins the presidency.
“If we are at the mercy of a coalition that has its stronghold elsewhere, I am worried for this region.” He said.
Muturi says, “Each of the strong coalitions has a stronghold where their Presidential candidate comes from, Mt Kenya people should read the signs of time and give your backing to a regional party that can negotiate for you.”
He said when political negotiations are brought to the table, those without a party to represent them will become part of the menu on the table.
“If you want to avoid becoming an item on the menu, on the negotiating table, support one strong party like the Democratic Party to represent your voice,” Muturi said.
He was speaking at Marimanti, Tharaka-Nithi County, where he met grassroots politicians allied to the Democratic Party.
Muturi presented party membership certificates to aspirants vying for various positions in the forthcoming August general election.
He said DP, was founded by retired President Mwai Kibaki and others in 1991, has its roots across Mt Kenya region and branches in almost all 47 counties.
Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative aspirant Millicent Morgan said a recent local survey of the Mt Kenya East Region had placed Muturi as the favourite candidate for the presidential seat.
