Sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala Named Sportsman of the Year in SOYA Awards

Kenyan trackman Ferdinand Omanyala has bagged the Sportsman of the Year at the 2021 Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA), beating legendary athletes like Eliud Kipchoge. The event was held at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega County.

The sensational record-breaking 100m sprinter emerged as a winner in a category which he was classed with Olympic marathon gold-medalist Eliud Kipchoge, rally driver Carl Tundo, rugby player Alvin ‘Buffa’ Otieno, and Tokyo Olympics 800M gold-medalist Emmanuel Korir.

“Sports Athlete of the year. Thank you to everyone who supported me in 2021.” Omanyala tweeted after the glorious win.

In the women’s category, Sportswoman for the Year was bestowed on double Olympic 1500m Champion Faith Kipyegon beating Olympic marathoners Peres Jepchirchir and Brigid Kosgei.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympics bronze medallist Nancy Chelangat scooped the Sportswoman Living with a Disability award as Deaflympian Simon Kibai took home the men’s award.

The first Kenyan to win the World under-20 walk race, Heristone Wanyonyi, took the most promising boy award, while 3,000M champion Teresa Muthoni from the World U20 Championship bagged the most promising girl award.

Charles Okere was named the coach of the year, and his former team, Vihiga Queens, won the best women’s sports team thrashing Kenya Rugby Lionesses and Beach Volleyball team. Okere has since been appointed to coach Harambee Starlets by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee.

The best male sports team of the year award went to Shujaa, beating FKF Premier League champions Tusker FC.
