Sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala Sets New National Record

Kenyan and Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala set a new National Record (NR) of 6.63 seconds in the 60m dash when he debuted at the World Indoor Tour Miramas Meeting on Friday, 4th February.

Omanyala broke the 17-year-old National Record (NR) previously held by, Paulvince Obuon having set it in 2005.

Last year during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games, Omanyala recorded an African best time of 9.77s breaking the 9.85s record by South African Akuni Sembine at the Kip-Keino Classics held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on 18th September 2021.

Speaking after the race the Tokyo Olympics semifinalist said: “I had fun. It’s a great experience. Though when I started to pick speed the race was over.

“I take it as training as I build towards the outdoor season. My target now is to run 6.40 seconds before the World Indoor Championships. I have more races and six weeks to improve on the time,” he added.

After the Miramas Meeting, Omanyala will be heading to Paris where he is scheduled to take part in two more races; Mondeville Meeting on 9th February and the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Paris on 17th February.

He is also set to compete inWorld Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia slated for 18th to 20th March and the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 in Eugene, USA from July 15th to 24th.
