The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has proposed, on December 14, a salary increase for several state officers including Members of Parliament and Senators from financial years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023.
In its proposition, the salaries of the lawmakers will shoot from Ksh621,250 to Ksh710,000. Medical allowances have been increased from Ksh75,000 to Ksh100,000.
“The proposed monthly consolidated remuneration package is fixed for the term of the office of the State officer in the Executive of the County Governments unless otherwise reviewed and set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission,”
The proposed salary increase includes house allowances, car grants, and other subsidies in line with section 31(2)(a) of the employment, Act, 2007.
Further, allowances for legislators sitting in various committees of the Parliament have been increased. Its chairpersons will pocket an additional allowance of Ksh15,000, per sitting, and Ksh7,500 for other members.
“Chairpersons shall be paid Ksh15,000 per sitting subject to a maximum of Ksh240,000 per month and members shall be paid Ksh7,500 per sitting subject to a maximum of Ksh120,000 per month,” SRC proposed.
Based on the 2017 gazetted pay, chairpersons of the committees in Parliament were given an allowance of Ksh8,000 per sitting while that of other members was Ksh5,000 per sitting.
According to SRC, the salaries of the President will remain capped at Ksh1,443,750 while that of his Deputy will remain at Ksh1,227,188. Correspondingly, Governors and Cabinet Secretaries will carry on with their salaries of Ksh924,000.
Following this development, SRC has invited views from the public and concerned stakeholders before the directive is effected.
“Pursuant to Articles 10,201 and 230 (5) of the constitution of Kenya, the commission is inviting memoranda and views from stakeholders and the public on the proposed remuneration and benefits structure for state officers.
