Suspected suicide bomber blows self up in Kisumu, kills elderly couple

An elderly couple was killed last night after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Awach sub-location, Katito, Kisumu County.
According to Nyakach OCPD Daniel Chacha, the suspect, identified as John Odhiambo, died on the spot alongside the couple after detonating the IED at around 10pm.
The daughter of the couple sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
“The suspect went to the home of the couple, engaged them in conversation, then detonated the device,” said Chacha.
The relationship between the two neighbours, who lived about 30 meters apart, is still unclear.
The OCPD said that the suspect had been on the radar of the police in connection with an explosion that occurred in Katito last year.
The suspect is alleged to have attempted to kill his girlfriend by detonating an explosive device on December 20, 2020.
Police say he went into hiding after the incident and only resurfaced yesternight.
