Eight Members of Parliament (MPs) from Deputy President William Ruto’s camp have spurned a meeting of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC), claiming that there were uninvited members in the caucus.

Led by Garissa Township lawmaker Aden Duale, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa, and Alice Wahome of Kandara, they pointed out that they decided to shun the meeting after finding out that some of the attendees were not MPs, yet the invitation read that the meeting was only meant to be attended by parliamentarians.

The MPs disapproved the presence of the Registrar of Political Parties, the chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, and other parties which have interests in the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

“On procedure, based on the letter I have received to engage this committee. I will execute the amendments on the floor on Wednesday.” Duale said.

Wahome added that the committee could have ensured that it is done with all the legal procedures stipulated by the law before calling on the MPs to make any amendments.

“I was coming as a member with a right to move my amendment on the floor. If I sit in the same meeting with stakeholders with no rights, I will be ceding my legislative job.” Wahome stated.

“JLAC should have first sat and prosecuted the public participation…complete the process, and then members can come and see if we can harmonize,” she added.

The meeting was officiated by Kangema MP Muturi Kigano, who remarked that the stakeholders were allowed to make an appearance at the meeting without forging any commentaries on the discussed bill.

Other MPs who walked out include Kipkelion East MP Joseph Limo, after being denied a chance to speak, MPs Didmus Barasa, Owen Baya, Daniel Tuitoek, and John Mutunga.

The meeting goes in advance for a special sitting scheduled for Wednesday, to debate the parties’ bill at all stages.
