Teen Mom Jailed For Starving 20-Month-Old Toddler to Death

A teenage British mother has been jailed for leaving her 20-month-old daughter to starve to death while partying. Verphy Kudi pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday, 6th August, and was sentenced to nine years in a Lewis Crown Court.

The young woman, who was celebrating her 18th birthday, is said to have locked up her baby in her apartment on 5th December 2019, in Brighton, London.

Media reports indicated that she had the time of her life and returned to her house on 11th December, only to find her ailing daughter helplessly lying on the floor.

Unfortunately, her daughter, Asiah, who was all alone and unattended to, passed on from influenza and starvation. Asiah was pronounced dead on arrival at Brighton’s Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital. 

Judge Christine Laing, QC, who sentenced her, said: “Asiah was alone in the flat for six days unable to do anything to draw attention to her plight. She was a helpless child and relied completely on you as a mother to provide for her needs. It’s almost unbearable to contemplate her suffering in the final days of her life. Suffering that she endured so you could celebrate your birthday and the birthdays of your friends as a carefree teenager.” 

The judge added: “It goes without saying that this is a particularly tragic case. With no doubt, it raises strong emotions in all who hear of it. But everyone should bear in mind that the charge I sentence you is one of manslaughter. It being accepted that you did not intend to cause Asiah’s death nor to cause her really serious harm.” 

However, many felt that the judge was so lenient with her yet she deserved to serve a life sentence in prison.
