The entry of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the Azimio la Umoja movement has left some partners in high dudgeon.
Up to eight parties in the coalition have been jolted from their comfort zones after suspecting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party, ODM of Raila Odinga and Kalonzo-led Wiper were negotiating behind their backs.
After the President convinced Kalonzo to close ranks with Raila following their acrimonious fallout occasioned by past betrayals, the alliance’s name changed to Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya. This was designed to factor in the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) which Kalonzo led before.
But leaders of Muungano Party, Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC), Narc, Kenya Reforms Party, DAP-K, Maendeleo Democratic Party, CCU and PPT feel there is a secret ploy to shortchange them.
In a joint statement released by Machakos Governor and MCC boss Alfred Mutua, the fringe outfits claim they were not consulted during changing of the coalition’s name.
They have also demanded to be furnished with the details of the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya pact before assenting to it.
“There is an indication the leadership of Azimio is made up of three parties only: Jubilee, ODM and Wiper. Leaving out the other founding parties.
“Coalitions agreement documents have not been shown to us, yet they are insisting that we should sign. We will not agree to this,” the statement reads in part.
Additionally, the aggrieved parties have warned that any attempts to zone regions will be rejected, stating that their candidates have already paid nomination fees and ready to square it out at the ballot.
On the choosing of Raila’s running mate, the leaders maintained that they must be part and parcel of the process, noting that the decision should be by consensus and not a boardroom appointment.
Sources have disclosed that the post has already been offered to Kalonzo.
Further, the Azimio partners have formed a lobby dubbed “Mwanza Mpya Caucus” to champion their agenda in the coalition.
Their demands are as follows:
- We should be the fourth leg caucus.
- We must renegotiate the document.
- We cannot have zoning.
- The deposited document (with the Registrar of Political Parties) has to be withdrawn.
- There has to be consensus on all decisions.
- There has to be consensus on all nominations.
In the event the above is not addressed urgently, they have vowed to bolt out and join other coalitions.
