Trouble in Guinea as president Alpha Conde detained – Kenyan Business Feed

Videos of former Guinean President Alpha Conde subdued and surrounded by soldiers went viral on social media Sunday afternoon.

The palace coup leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya took over in an announcement on National Television.

“We have decided, after having taken the president, to dissolve the constitution,” Colonel Mamady Doumbouya said while flanked by soldiers toting assault rifles in a video first shared by AFP.

The soldiers also announced the shut down of Guinea’s land and air borders and the dissolution of the government

In one of the videos, Conde is seen sitting in a sofa set surrounded by soldiers.

The coup leaders say that the 83-year-old failed to uphold the constitution and sought a third term in office.

Conde had also increased his salary by over 100 per cent.

The African Union (A.U.) has called for the immediate release of Guinea President Alpha Conde and also condemned the military action against the government by special forces.

“The current President of the African Union H.E. Félix Tshisekedi and the Chairman of the African Union Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat condemn any seizure of power by force and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde,” the continental body said in a press release.

Guinea is a nation of around 13 million people. It is one of the world’s poorest countries despite boasting significant mineral resources and has long been beset by political instability.
