Uhuru Announces Partial Lockdown in Nairobi, Coast Counties

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the cessation of all movement by air, road or rail to and from the Nairobi Metropolitan Area to stop the spread of Coronavirus into the country on a day that Kenya reported two more COVID-19 related deaths taking the number of people who have succumbed to the disease in the country to six.

In a televised address, President Kenyatta announced the partial lockdown in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area will be effective on Monday, April 6 for an initial period of 21 days.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Area has been defined as: Nairobi City County, Part of Kiambu up to Chania River bridge including Rironi, Ndenderu, Kiambu Town, Part of Machakos up to Athi River, Katani, Part of Kajiado including Kitengela, Kiserian and Ongata Rongai, Ngong Town.

By the same token, the movement to and from the Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale by road, rail or air has also been banned effective Wednesday, April 8 also for an initial period of 21 days.

“82% of Kenya’s reported cases have been recorded in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and 14% of the cases in the Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi,” said President Kenyatta.
