President Uhuru Kenyatta has Thursday arrived at the United Nations Complex in Gigiri, Nairobi to preside over the official opening of two-day events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Founded in June 1972 following the United Nations Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, the Nairobi-based UNEP is charged with coordinating the United Nations’ environmental activities.
The president is joined by H.E Muhammadu Buhari President of Nigeria, H.E Mokgweetsi Masisi President of Botswana and H.E Felix Moloua Prime Minister of Central Africa Republic.
Earlier on, President Kenyatta unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the fiftieth anniversary of UNEP.
President Uhuru Kenyatta together with fellow Head of States and Government were also taken through the tap of plastics by UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
The 30-foot-tall installation which was created by international artist and activist Benjamin Von Wong is located at the UN Headquarters in Nairobi where discussions of the Global Plastic Treaty took place.
The build-out of the installation provided temporary jobs for over 100 residents of Kibera. The masterpiece highlights that the plastic conversation revolves around recycling and seeks to get plastic production back under control by making sure we #TurnOffThePlasticTap.
