Uhuru Breaks Silence Over ‘Artificial’ Fuel Shortage

President Uhuru Kenyatta has played down claims that oil marketers are hoarding fuel to create an artificial shortage with the aim of forcing the government to increase prices.

Speaking at AIC Pipeline Church in Nairobi, the Head of State said the short supply is as a result of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

He added that the crisis in the two European countries has also led to the skyrocketing of prices of basic necessities.

“It is a war we know nothing about, but it has affected the whole world. There is a shortage of many commodities and prices have soared. The shortages have nothing to do with Kenya. Let’s us pray the two countries will stop fighting, ” he said.

However, the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) maintains that there is no scarcity of fuel.

KPC boss Macharia Irungu revealed that Kenya has sourced enough fuel to serve the whole population.

“We want to confirm that there is ample stock of petroleum products in our systems throughout the country to meet the demand, ” he said.

Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) have proposed reviewing of fuel prices every two weeks, claiming the global market has been unstable in recent past.

However, Petroleum Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau dismissed the suggestion, saying it is not feasible.

Kamau also denied there was fuel shortage, insisting that the crisis is only in people’s minds, though long queues have been witnessed in petrol stations.

“There is enough stock of fuel. What is happening is that there is panic buying because people are being told there is shortage,” Kamau noted.
