Addressing the nation at Harambee House on Monday, the President said that the country had made significant progress in containing the virus.

“I order and direct that the nationwide curfew that is currently in force between the hours of 9:00 pm and 4:00 am daily, be and is hereby extended by a further 30 days,” President Kenyatta said.

The President said the decision was pegged on a series of irreducible minimums that had to be met before easing the containment measures to revive an ailing economy.

“We have reached a reasonable level of preparedness across the country. We have not yet met 100 percent across our counties,” he said.

In his speech, the President further extended the ban on social and political gatherings for a further 30 days.

“The prohibition against social and political gatherings, of whatever nature, is extended for a further period of 30 days,” he said.

The state has also extended the ban on the number of attendees to weddings and funerals for 30 days.

In his address, the President also ordered the restriction of the operation of bars to ‘take-away’ only.

President Kenyatta urged Kenyans to exercise cautious optimism and avoid reckless abandon.

“I believe that, although the path to recovery is rocky and uneven, it is navigable,” he added.
