President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended the nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew for another 60 days following the rise in Covid-19 infections in the country.
Uhuru stated that the 10.00 pm to 4.00 am curfew hours will continue to be observed for another two months. This includes the 13 Western region counties whose 7 pm curfew was recently lifted.
These counties that were previously termed as Covid-19 hotspot zones were Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Busia Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, and Trans Nzoia.
The President also suspended all physical in-person gatherings and meetings including political rallies for 60 days.
“In enforcing these measures all security sector agencies are directed to ensure that organizers and individual leaders, including senior public sector officials and political leaders take personal responsibility and are held to account for any violation of the measures,” said the President.
Additionally, the President announced that all social gatherings including weddings, funerals have been restricted to 100 people and that all of them should follow laid down procedures.
Places of worship were also instructed to continue adhering to the one-third rule for in-person worship and congregational worship according to guidelines issued by the Inter-Faith Council.
Bars, restaurants, and eateries were all instructed to continue adhering to the rules previously issued by the Ministry of Health led by CS Mutahi Kagwe.
The Head of State announced the new containment measures on Wednesday, 18th August after meeting leaders of political parties at State House, Mombasa.
The meeting was attended by Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Gideon Moi (KANU), and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya).
The leaders agreed to play a leading role in encouraging Kenyans to abide by the Covid-19 containment protocols and interventions including uptake of vaccines.
They also applauded Government efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the country, and appealed to Kenyans to take personal responsibility so as to safeguard the health and wellbeing of all Kenyans.
Also present at the meeting were Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua, and Cabinet Secretaries Dr Fred Matiang’i (Interior) and Mutahi Kagwe (Health) among other senior Government officials.
