President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga to replace him later this year.
The Head of State made his declaration during a forum attended by at least 4,000 youths at State House, Nairobi. The young people subscribe to the ideals of the Azimio la Umoja Movement, which Raila will use to seek the top seat.
He exuded confidence that the former Prime Minister will defeat Deputy President William Ruto in the August presidential election.
“We (in Azimio) have our candidate, the strategy, and the ability,” he said.
The President pledged to go around the country preaching peace and marketing the former Prime Minister.
“We will form a government; it will take over and then I will retire. Expect me on the ground observing what needs to be done and advising my successor,” he said.
He acknowledged that Azimio is a movement that will bring all Kenyans together.
The Kenyan leader praised his ‘Handshake’ partner, saying he has demonstrated leadership by putting the country first.
“Raila had an opportunity to demand half of the government in 2018 when we brokered a truce. He didn’t. He went for the Handshake.
In addition, the first in command rebuked Deputy President William Ruto’s camp for claiming that Raila “is too old” to lead. He insisted age has nothing to do with one’s ability to propel the country forward.
“Generation is a factor of the mind, not age. You can be a very young person but with the mind of a person without imagination,” he said.
President Kenyatta also defended his legacy, saying its impact will be felt after he leaves office.
“I thank God for giving us the opportunity to do what we have done through a lot of difficulties.”
