President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday joined other world leaders at the opening session of the Stockholm+50 International environment meeting.

He is co-chair the two-day meeting dubbed ‘Stockholm+50’ with the host, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

The meeting starting off with leaders calling for greater global action to solve the triple planetary crisis.

“We must ensure that no country is left behind in the green transition,” said Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson. “…This is not just an option. This is our moral obligation.”

“We must place true value on the environment and go beyond GDP as a measure of human progress and well-being,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “Instead, we must shift to a circular and regenerative economy.”

“Science has told us that the solutions we need for fair and just transformation changes in our economy, our finance systems, our lifestyles, our governance,” said Inger Andersen Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).” Adding that Stockholm+50 is a chance for the world to commit, once and for all, to delivering on the transformations.”

“By the time we head to COP27 we should aim to have developed a comprehensive, holistic, and transformative package of environmental actions,” added President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta.

Stockholm+50 aims to contribute to accelerating a transformation that leads to sustainable and green economies, more jobs, and a healthy planet for all, where no one is left behind.

The high level meeting is convened by the United Nations and is hosted by Sweden with support from the Government of Kenya and comes between the 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) and UNEP@ 50 held in Nairobi early this year and the 2022 UN Oceans Conference which Kenya and Portugal will co-host in Lisbon at the end of June.
