The People Daily newspaper, owned by the Kenyatta Family, has apologised to President Uhuru Kenyatta after publishing an erroneous story.
The publication was evaluating ODM leader Raila Odinga’s prospects of becoming the next President.
A brief history of the times the former Prime Minister has contested for the presidency was given.
However, the paper made a mistake by indicating that President Kenyatta rigged out the ODM leader in the 2017 General Election.
“…Raila made attempt for the presidency in August 2017 against Uhuru Kenyatta and Uhuru Kenyatta stole votes,” an excerpt from the story reads.
The local daily has now published an apology to the President and the ex-Premier, saying the mishap was only because the story was not subjected to the necessary editorial checks.
“We published content suggesting that the 2017 election results were rigged. This was as a result of production oversight which saw unverified content published.
“We take this early opportunity to withdraw the said content and apologise to President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga for the embarrassment the text many have caused them,” the statement read.
Raila has made four unsuccessful stabs at the top seat and he is expected to make the fifth next year.
After the 2017 election, he challenged the Head of State’s victory at the Supreme Court, mustering the nullification of the presidential election.
Of the six judges who listened to the case, four were convinced that the electoral commission failed to observe election rules, hence, the presidential results were not accurate.
However, Raila refused to participate in the repeat poll, citing that the ground level disadvantaged the opposition.
