BBI Crusaders Register First Win in Court

President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga and leaders who help them in promoting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) recorded their first win in the appeal against a High Court ruling that declared the referendum bill 2020 unconstitutional.

As hearings of the petition kicked off yesterday, three judges of the Appellate Court trashed part of the BBI appeal that had been presented by city lawyer Charles Kanjama.

The court told Kanjama that his appeal is limited to the High Court judgement and cannot provide additional evidence as he had intended.

Attorney-General Paul Kihara Kariuki wanted the entire Kanjama’s petition thrown out on grounds that the High Court rejected his bid to be join as an interested party. The advocate has been poking holes on how the electoral agency collected signatures is support of the BBI Constitutional (Amendment) Bill.

Why DP Ruto Allies in Mt Kenya Are Uneasy

Claims that Deputy President William Ruto plotted defeat of several influential politicians from Mt Kenya region during the 2017 Jubilee Party primaries have started to cause jitters in his camp.

Billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi has, without revealing much, confirmed that he will square it out for the presidency in next year’s election.

Wanjigi, who has deep pockets, is said to be planning a grand strategy before unveiling his bid officially.

In the 2013 General Election, he is said to be the man behind Jubilee coalition of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto. After falling out with the duo, the influential power broker warmed towards ODM leader Raila Odinga and helped in creation of the National Super Alliance (Nasa).

His main role in Nasa was mobilising resources for presidential campaigns to match the Jubilee team, which was already enjoying trappings of power. Wanjigi is a life member of ODM party.

TSC Invites Knut For Salary Negotiations

Days after Nominated MP Wilson Sossion exited the Kenya National of Teachers (Knut), the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opened talks with the labour movemeent as well as other unions representing tutors.

The negotiations will center on salary increment for teachers.

Before Sossion resigned on Friday last week, the Teachers’ employer had snubbed Knut in the talks.

Man Who Killed Teenager Gets Light Sentence

The Kiambu man who strangled his teenage cousin to death in 2015 has been a suspended sentence of five years.

Kiambu High Court judge Mary Kasango ruled that Dominic Karanja, who was found guilty of manslaughter, did not plan to kill the boy and was only acting out of provocation. Karanja is said to have killed the teenager for trying to seduce his wife.

The sentence means the father of two will be a free man and can only be convicted again if he commits another crime within the five years.

Moi Grandson Summoned

A Nakuru Court has directed former President Daniel Arap Moi’s grandson to appear before it in person after he allegedly disobeyed a court order.

Collins Moi is said to have failed to show up at Lancet laboratory where his samples and those of two children alleged to his were to be taken for DNA tests.

His ex-wife, Gladys Jeruto, returned to court, saying her former husband neither turned up for the paternity test nor communicated about his whereabouts.

Health Workers Protest After Colleague Beaten by Police

Medics in Nyamira County yesterday boycotted work after one of their colleague was reportedly beaten and arrested by police officers who were enforcing the curfew.

The health workers camped outside Keroka Level Four Hospital, demanding justice for the victim.

They vowed not to return to work until action is taken against the alleged perpetrators, saying the male nurse is an essential service provider.

Court Allows Bus Company to Evict Squatters

Eldoret Express Company Ltd has been allowed to evict over 1,000 squatters from a 640-acre piece of land in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

With protection of police, the bus company will repossess the land after a 13-year legal battle.

The squatters say they moved to the land in 2007 after they were displaced from their homes following the disputed presidential poll.

KRA, City Hall Row Over Collection of Taxes

Reports that the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was performing poorly in collection of taxes in Nairobi has rattled city MCAs.

Led by Nairobi County Assembly Minority Leader Mchael Ogada, who is also the Budget and Appropriation Committee Vice-Chair, the ward representatives are demanding that the role of revenue collection be returned to the county.

“Every day we see vehicles in CBD being clamped down by KRA officers yet they cannot even raise Ksh10 billion. KRA is doing worse than what was there before. If the officers are not competent and up to the task, they should pack and go,” Ogada said.

Museveni Emerges After Claims He Had Been Taken Ill

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni made a public appearance on Monday after speculations at the weekend that he had been taken ill and evacuated to Europe for treatment.

Staying clear of the rumours, Musveni called out the Western Nations for depriving Africa of Covid-19 vaccines, saying African countries should stop depending on donations.

Describing the rich nations as selfish, the Ugandan leader said Africa should now think of ways of producing its own vaccines.
