Like father, like son or like father, like daughter.

The 2022 presidential election is shaping to be a two-horse race between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The two veteran politicians have carefully picked their close confidants, the majority of them politicians and technocrats, to help their jungle in the murky waters of politics.

But given that they may need to select the best people who are unlikely to betray them in the cause, it is no surprise that both have their children as part of campaigns on social media and the ground.

The second in command has decided to work with firstborn son Nick Ruto while the former Prime Minister is working with his youngest daughter Winnie Odinga.

The role of Nick and Winnie may not be clearly defined, but evidently, they are there to make sure that their dads are on the right path to State House and people surrounding them are genuine.

Lately, Nick has been very vocal on social media, invariably appealing to Kenyans to rally behind his father.

Just days ago, he waded into the war between the DP and his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, calling out the Head of State for bluffing his father.

“He (Uhuru) needed Ruto to beat the whole opposition. But today, he is organising six opposition principals to defeat Ruto. Ruto will mercilessly beat them on the ballot. Some struggles are too hard,” he wrote on Facebook.

Winnie on the other hand has been accompanying her father on both local and international trips. Her work is to make sure that the AU Special Envoy looks good before stepping out in public.

When President Kenyatta and the ODM chief were unveiling the second version of the BBI document in Kisii County, Winnie had to quickly fix her dad’s crooked hat as the photo shoot was going on.

In a past interview, she disclosed that her father, fondly known to his supporters as baba, is not a good listener at times.

“Sometimes you tell him to say something when he is addressing the crowds, but ends up creating his own story. But I really enjoy working with him,” she said.

Due to the instrumental roles, they play in their fathers’ political engagements, often they find themselves being rebuked by Kenyans.

Critics brand them as “spoilt kids” and “dynasty heirs” who ride on their dads’ connections, essentially to get anything they want.
