Kenya’s Vihiga Queens have been crowned the CAF Women Champions League Cecafa qualifiers after edging Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) FC 2-1 in the final played on Thursday, 9th September, in Nairobi. The game was played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Jentrix Shikangwa opened the scoring for Vihiga Queens in the 27th minute before Vivian Makokha scored an own goal in the 53rd minute to draw the game level.

Shikangwa made it 2-1 after converting a late-minute penalty in the 95th minute after Violet Wanyonyi was brought down inside the box by CBE defender Tarikwa Yakura.

Vihiga got to the finals after finishing second in Group B, following comfortable wins over South Sudan and Djiboutian side FAD. They had earlier lost 4-2 against the CBE in the group stage.

The win has earned Vihiga Queens a ticket to the continental Caf Women Champions league that will be hosted by Egypt in November.

The win also sees the Kenyan queens walk home with a cash prize of Ksh3 million while CBE FC of Ethiopia will take home an equivalent of Ksh2 million.

Shikangwa was crowned Player of the Tournament, pocketing Ksh50,000.
