President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated KCB Women’s Volleyball team for clinching the African club championship title in Kelibia, Tunisia.

The bankers were on Tuesday evening crowned champions after seeing off Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Led by veteran volleyball coach Japheth Munala, the Kenyan girls beat Egyptian giants to end their 16-year-title drought.

Veronica Adhiambo, Mercy Moim, Sharon Chepchumba, and Emmaculate Nekesa commanded the banker’s onslaught for goals in the win which saw Kenya lead 2-0 (25-18,25-22) before the Egyptians took the third set 11-25.

KCB would respond stronger in the fourth set which they narrowly won 28-26 to end Kenya’s nine-year championship drought.

The bankers are the first Kenyan club to win the trophy since Kenya Prisons in 2013. KCB last won the title in 2006.

KCB had on Monday knocked out Kenya Pipeline 3-0 in the semifinals to reach the finals.

It was also sweet revenge for the Kenyan side who lost 3-1 to the Egyptian outfit during the 2009 final in Nairobi.

At the same time, the Kenya Pipeline volleyball team also secured bronze in the women’s Africa Club Champions home sider coming from behind to record a nail-biting 3-2 win (20-25,25-23,19-25,25-23,15-11) over home side Carthage.

Chepchumba was voted the Most Valuable Player, Edith Wisa Best Blocker, while Mercy Moim was feted as the Best Attacker.

Kenya Pipeline’s left attacker Veronica Adhiambo was also voted Best Attacker.
