– Sneijder narrated how his love for alcohol cost him a big chance to prove himself at Real Madrid
– The Dutch international was one of the most promising youngsters in 2007
– His drinking ways also cost him his marriage at the time
Former Dutch international Wesley Sneijder was the first to admit that the fast lane life after he joined Real Madrid was a huge contributor to the downfall of his marriage.
Sneijder moved to Real Madrid during his prime years as a football player but failed to live up to the hype that came with his move to the Bernabeu.
The retired winger, 36, now admits his ‘rock and roll’ lifestyle did little to help his cause at the time.
In his autobiography, the Dutch international, whose fondest memories are arguably his time at Inter Millan, narrated how he was a serial drinker during his two year stint in Spain.

According to him, Madrid bosses did their best to cover up the worst excesses of his party lifestyle but eventually that lifestyle cost him, among other things, his marriage.
“I was not aware that moving to Real also meant I moved into the nightlife of Madrid,” he explained in his biography.
“I got sucked into it. I was young, I was enjoying success and I was loving all the attention. That is where it must have gone wrong for me later in my life. I didn’t do drugs, but I did do booze and had a rock-‘n-roll lifestyle as one of the stars of Real Madrid. All the things I was up to were all covered up,” he went on.
Ramona Streekstra, his first wife, fled the marriage with their son after his partying became a little too much.
His colleagues at the time tried to point out his problem but Sneijder just would not listen.
“Others pointed it out to me. Ruud van Nistelrooy said it, Arjen Robben said it They were hammering me, telling me to keep my discipline as a player. They said that if I carried on like this, I would not survive for long,” he explained.
Having moved to Los Blancos in 2007 as one of the most promising young prospects at the time, he was sold to Inter Milan for a cut price of £12million two years later.
