– Andriy Yarmolenko’s late strike was enough to condemn Chelsea to a humiliating defeat as it rendered Willian’s brace a mere consolation
– The three points were enough to get the Hammers out of the relegation zone as they push for survival
Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four suffered a dent on Wednesday night, July 1, as West Ham United condemned the Blues to a 3-2 defeat.
The Premier League clash saw Chelsea twice rally from behind but could not keep with the hosts’ pressure.
West Ham nearly netted the opener inside 13 minutes, only for Antonio to drag his shot across the face of goal in a one-on-one with Kepa.
The David Moyes-tutored side almost took the take the lead once again in the 34th minute through Soucek only for his effort to be ruled out for an offside by VAR.
The homeside went on to concede a penalty five minutes to the break, with Willian stepping up to bury the ball inside the net.
However, Soucek restored parity for West Ham minutes later to ensure the two sides head into the break level.
The resumption of the second half saw the David Moyes-tutored side take the lead in the 51st minute as Antonio made it 2-1 with a close range shot.
Willian drew the west London side level in the 74th minute, whipping a free-kick towards the top right to make it 2-2.
The visitors thought they had salvaged a crucial point away from home, only for Yarmolenko to slam hope past Kepa at the death.
The defeat at the London Stadium leaves the Frank Lampard side sitting fourth but just two points off fifth-placed Man United.
West Ham have now beat Chelsea both home and away this season even as the Hammers push to avoid the drop.
