Will CS Wamalwa, MP Wamalwa strike deal 2022? – Weekly Citizen

Two weeks ago, Devolution secretary Eugene Wamalwa spent time flying over Kiminini constituency whose MP Chris Wamalwa as the contest for Trans-Nzoia governor’s seat takes shape. The CS is surveying the path for his near future as he exits the national government.

From Eugene’s address at Kiminini town, it is clear that the CS is vouching for the Building Bridges Initiative which is for a parliamentary system of government and which could allow him to secure a perch in the national government in 2022.

“Who told you it is only Raila Odinga who can be the prime minister? I can also become one,” he told a public gathering after attending a catholic church service.

Pundits were quick to point out that perhaps in anticipation of referendum following the BBI, Eugene could contest Kiminini constituency as he seeks to maintain a cabinet post in the next national government.

Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba

This would give Chris a free hand in his quest to succeed Governor Patrick Khaemba as part of the duo plan to remain relevant in the country’s politics.

It is worth noting that Kiminini grounds have played a big role in breeding local politicians including Eugene himself when he represented the area as the Saboti MP before Kiminini was created as a constituency. Saboti is represented by ODM’s Caleb Amisi.

It is also here that the late vice president Wamalwa Kijana hailed from and this was not lost to Chris when he began his political journey a decade ago.

Ex-Minister Kipruto Kirwa

For a long time now, Trans-Nzoia county has remained relevant in the country’s political map with representatives from the late Masinde Muliro, Wafula Wabuge, and Kijana, Fred Gumo, Eugene and Chris. The Kiminini MP is the deputy minority leader in the national assembly.

Other figures included Kipruto arap Kirwa who was a cabinet minister, Kiprono Kittony who was the KNCCI president, former IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, veteran politician Noah Wekesa and Zipporah Kittony who was a nominated MP and leader of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation.

And with the exit of Wekesa, Kirwa, Kiprono, Chiloba and Kittony from the national limelight, Trans-Nzoia county seems “orphaned” from the state with the exemption of the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Eugene and Chris could be prospecting for Trans-Nzoia county to continue holding its quota at the national level by going into negotiations.

Ekuru Aukot

As things stand, the Ekuro Aukot’s Punguza Mizigo Bill is not likely to go pass in Trans-Nzoia, opening room for Eugene and Chris to set stage for the BBI.

As Chris will be on the ground campaigning for the governor’s office, the Devolution CS will be running for either Kiminini or Saboti parliamentary seat with an eye for a national office as provided for the impending BBI Bill.

A deal between the Wamalwas could go against the two other governor aspirants Abraham Sing’oei and Kakai Bisau, both who are working in the Office of Deputy President William Ruto.

It goes without saying that Sing’oei and Bisau will go the same route their boss will dictate: being against a plebiscite to change the constitution.

The DP has been vocal against any constitution amendments terming them as meant to satisfy echoes of a few individuals.

With this in mind, Sing’oei and Bisau are disadvantaged by the Eugene-Chris alliance that could sweep the board across Trans-Nzoia should it be a reality.
