“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate” – Will Smith

Will Smith and Family at the Oscars

Upon slapping Chris Rock on the Oscars stage last weekend, Will Smith has been facing possible expulsion or suspension by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. But Smith has beaten The Academy to the punch by submitting his resignation first.

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” Smith said in a statement. “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.” Smith said his actions both betrayed the trust of the Academy and deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.

What the resignation means is that Will Smith is no longer a voting member of The Academy. Yes he can still keep his Oscars award, get nominated and win future Oscars awards but he may no longer get the privilege of receiving exclusive access to screenings of nominated movies.

The Academy received Smith’s resignation but mentioned that they will continue with disciplinary proceedings against him for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct.
