Deputy President William Ruto has urged religious leaders to speed up presentation of proposals to the government on guidelines that will be enforced to allow reopening of places of worship in the country.
Ruto made the remarks on Tuesday, June 16, shortly after he met church leaders of the East Africa Pentecostal Church from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Nairobi and Isiolo counties at his Karen offices in Nairobi.

The DP, however, expressed optimism in quick resumption of worship services noting that the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya was already developing protocols that will set the stage for reopening of houses of worship.
“We are appealing to spiritual leaders to make timely presentations to the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya established by the government to expedite the reopening of the places of worship.
We are pleased the council is already developing protocols for the systematic resumption of services in the houses of prayer in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ruto.
The church leaders who visited the DP in his office were led by Presiding General Overseer Bishop Samuel Henry Muguna.
The Inter-Faith Council was jointly appointed by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and his health counterpart Mutahi Kagwe.
It was charged with developing and implementing protocols on the phased resumption of onsite worship in strict adherence to the measures put in place to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
The council will be chaired by Archbishop Anthony Muheria of the Nyeri Catholic Archdiocese. Its mandate will lapse on December 31, 2020, but may be extended at the discretion of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
