Winners pose with their Trophies during the 11th edition of the Kalasha Film & TV Awards 2021 held at The Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on 10th December 2021.
The Kenya Film Commission on Friday 10th December announced the winners of the 11th edition of the Kalasha International Film and TV awards during a colorful gala event held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
The Kenya Film Commission Chief Executive, Mr Timothy Owase, lauded nominees for their individual and collective efforts towards building a thriving art scene through either creating films or participating in them. “Our key mandate as a commission is to develop a vibrant local film and television industry, which in turn creates jobs and wealth,” Mr Owase said. “In the past one year, we have had some exciting activities to stimulate growth in this industry.”
He said, among them was the the second call for the empowerment fund and issuing of Ksh25 million for the second cycle for film concepts in development, distribution as well as marketing.
Mr Jerome Ochieng, the Principal Secretary, State Department of Innovation, Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, commended the Kenya Film Commission for its commitment towards supporting the industry. He said the government is keen on promoting the Kenyan film industry through a supportive policy framework.
The Ministry of ICT has operationalized the Film Incentive Package that offers relief to film producers who are keen to shoot films in Kenya to increase foreign earnings and create more jobs.
There was a special appearance by actress and Kalasha nominee Mumbi Maina, an award-winning actress who as guest speaker discussed her experience as a creative in this industry. “It is a great honor to be speaking in a room full of my peers and so many other veterans that I look up to in the industry,” Mumbi said.
“I have been in this industry for over 10 years, starting off as an actress and dancer and starring in local and international films. I have seen the growth of the industry through my personal growth and also through the quality of productions that are being churned out.”
In this next decade, she said, it can only get better through collective effort and engaging in progressive discussions with relevant industry players to uplift the industry.
