Reports indicate that a matatu driver attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided head on with a lorry that was headed in the opposite direction.
The matatu had been coming from Murang’a and was ferrying passengers to Kilifi for an event at Pwani University scheduled for Thursday.
Injured passengers are receiving treatment at the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi while bodies of the deceased were taken to the the mortuary within the same facility.
Taita Taveta Police Commander Saidi Kiprotich urged drivers to be more keen on the road and observe traffic rules.
He also warned companies against letting drivers operate vehicles when they are tired or lack sleep.
