The government has warned a road contractor in Nyeri county and given it a two-months ultimatum to complete the recarpeting of a road or face sanctions.
Maxvictor Enterprises which was awarded a Sh66 million contract to reseal and recarpet a 7-kilometre section along the Othaya-Kariki-Chinga road in Othaya constituency was given until end of November to complete the works or have the contract cancelled.
The contactor risks being blacklisted and not being allowed to bid for government contracts if he fails to meet the deadline.
Nyeri county development implementation and coordination committee is concerned, although the rehabilitation of the road that serves the agriculturally rich tea growing zone was projected to have been completed by mid-May this year, the contractor has continued to drag his feet subjecting residents of the area to untold suffering.
The committee chaired by the area county commissioner David Kipkemei wants the contractor not given any more extension but subjected to sanctions if he fails the meet the November deadline.
The contractor is accused of not adhering to the contractual timeline. At one time, residents protested over the delay in repairing the road.
KeRRA deputy director in charge of Nyeri and Murang’a regions Joseph Wanjohi who was forced to visit the project threatened to slap the contractor with a Sh4 million penalty over the delay. However, it is said, it was a mere public gimmick by KeRRA officials since the contractor has pocketed them and they are on his payroll.
According to area MCA, Kiruga Thuku, the contractor is arrogant and does shoddy job.
Gachichio Mureithi, a resident and GeofreyWachira, the chairman of the local boda boda riders said the road has led to loss of lives as the contractor had failed to complete the work one year after the contract was awarded
