A new born baby was on Sunday, July 10, pulled out of a 60 ft deep latrine in Mururi trading centre, Kirimara location, Kirinyaga County.

Shocked residents milled around the latrine as they tried to comprehend an incident that has left many wondering why a mother would throw an innocent child inside a latrine.

Kirimara Location Chief Naftaly Ndege told Wananchi Reporting that the baby was discovered by a young girl who had gone to the latrine to answer to a call of nature.

“The young girl heard the child crying, and that’s when she alerted her mother who then alerted her neighbours,” said the chief.

After receiving the news, the administrator mobilised the residents who worked together to retrieve the infant from the hole.

“The baby was retrieved alive, but appeared to be struggling to breath. She was naked, and only covered by sheets of tissue paper,” said the chief.

The chief and the residents rushed the child to a local private hospital where she was cleaned and treated.

According to Ndege, the baby’s umbilical cord had been cut, which raised concerns she may have caught an infection having spent some time in the latrine.

The infant has since been taken to Kimbimbi sub-county hospital where she is currently being taken care of.

“She is more than a miracle, considering the condition we found her in, I’m sure she will live a healthy life,” one of the residents, Simon Magondu, told Wananchi Reporting

The chief said that they have started investigating various health facilities in the area as they try to find the mother, and have her prosecuted.
