Singer Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has been appointed as a member of a government committee aimed at tackling the Covid-19 pandemic.
A report by The Standard on Thursday, August 6, indicated that the singer had been selected as a member of the committee put together by the Lake Region Economic Bloc that comprises of 14 counties.
Quoting Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the publication also indicated that the team would be tasked with providing advice on the Covid-19 pandemic.
He further noted that the committee would be tasked with mobilising resources for the fight against Covid-19 in the western region.

“The partial reopening of the economy and cross-border movement of people caused increased Covid-19 infections. This requires more commitment to help fight the virus.
“Mobilisation of critical actors in both public and private sectors is of utmost importance towards mounting an effective regional Covid-19 control plan,” he stated.
This comes as the country’s Covid-19 cases continue spiking with the 14 counties having recorded 1,255 cases as of Wednesday, July 29.
So far, 23,873 people have contracted the virus that has claimed 391 lives in Kenya. 9,930 people have, however, recovered from the virus.
Independently, the singer had, at the beginning of July, offered to help celebrities who were struggling as a result of the pandemic.
She had asked them to reach out to her besides her efforts to help evicted families.
“Please to all celebrities who can’t afford their lives right now. Please inbox me! Dm me. I cant buy you Lamborghini, But I can provide food and accommodation until corona is gone,” she posted on her social media pages.
The Lake Basin Economic bloc constitutes Kakamega, Kisumu, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Busia, Bomet, Siaya, Nyamira, Migori, Kisii and Vihiga counties.
The bloc was created in 2018 to drive the development agenda in the Western region.
Abala Wanga, who had resigned in 2019 to take up the role of Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o’s political adviser, was re-appointed as the bloc’s CEO in July 2020.
