Premier League giants Arsenal have reportedly contacted Spanish side Barcelona over the possibility of signing France international Samuel Umtiti this summer.

Arsenal want to bolster their squad at the end of the season and have identified the french defender as a target.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Gunners’ chief Raul Sanllehi has opened talks with Barcelona director of football Eric Abidal over a summer deal.

In September 2018, Umtiti suffered a knee injury and returned back to action in February this year in which he has only played two games for Barcelona since then.

But last summer, the 25-year-old signed a five-year deal with Barcelona with an astronomical release clause of €500 million.

It is not yet clear if Arsenal will be able to meet Barcelona’s release clause for Umtiti when the ongoing season comes to an end.

Since joining reigning Spanish champions Barcelona, the Frenchman has won La Liga and two Copa del Rey titles during his time at the Nou Camp.
