Efforts to find a 35-year-old miner, Tom Okwach, in Abimbo village, Siaya County, have hit a snag after excavators operated by rescue teams failed to work due to lack of fuel.
The hope of finding the man alive is diminishing day by day as he has been trapped below huge boulders and soil for two weeks now.
Other miners who were trapped after the mines collapsed have since been rescued as the search for Okwach is still underway.
Cornel Rasanga, Siaya County Governor, lauded the efforts of the County Government which has been working jointly with the villagers who help the rescue teams navigate down the collapsed mines.
Okwach was communicating to the rescuers and has since gone silent for three days, leaving the rescue teams clinging to hope on whether he is still living.
Governor Rasanga affirmed that despite mining being a function by National Government, his administration had stepped in to ensure they provide necessary support in rescuing the men.
“We have done our best by providing food to the rescue team and the affected families. We paid the medical bills for those rescued and will meet the burial expenses of the unfortunate man who died,” He said.
“National Government and county teams are at the site. All we hope is that they will get Okwach out alive.” He added.
Okwach’s family has been camping on the site since the day the miners were trapped, and his father, Martin Sikuku, says that he is emotionally disturbed after efforts to rescue his son seem fruitless.
“I only need to see my son, whether alive or dead. The psychological torture is unbearable. I need closure. I will remain here and wait for the news from the rescue team,” He said.
