Ex-DP Ruto Lawyer Karim Khan Set to be Sworn in as New ICC Prosecutor – LitKenya

British lawyer Karim Asad Ahmad Khan, who represented Deputy President William Ruto in the International Criminal Court (ICC), is set to be sworn in as the new court’s prosecutor.

A swearing-in ceremony for Khan will be held at The Hague, in the Netherlands, on Wednesday 16th June 2021.

Khan will take a public oath of office declaring: “I solemnly undertake that I will perform my duties and exercise my powers as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court honourably, faithfully, impartially and conscientiously, and that I will respect the confidentiality of investigations and prosecutions.”

Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi, president of the ICC’s Assembly of State Parties (ASP), and Judge Piotr Hofmanski, president of the ICC, will also deliver remarks at the ceremony.

Khan, who is the current head of the UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL will officially assume the post of the ICC Prosecutor the same day he will be sworn in.

He was elected on 12th February as the new ICC prosecutor, replacing Gambian Fatou Bensouda, who is leaving office after nine years.

Khan garnered 72 votes in the second round of voting, defeating Irishman Fergal Gaynor, who got 42 votes.

The race had four final contestants who included Spain’s Carlos Castresana Fernandez, and Italy’s Francesco Lo Voi.
