The three terror convicts who escaped from the Kamiti Maximum Prison earlier this week were rearrested on Thursday in Mwingi, Kitui County.

Mohammed Ali Abikar, Musharaf Abdalla, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo were apprehended following a tip-off from members of the public.

The trio made a stop at Malalani market to buy milk, water, and biscuits. They looked weak.

Locals suspected them they started to ask for directions to Garissa and Boni Forest in Lamu. The fugitives were reportedly on their way to Somalia.

According to authorities, the three would trek during the night and hide after sunshine.

After their recapture, a chopper from Nairobi was dispatched to pick them from Kitui.

And perhaps for the first time in their lives, the escapees enjoyed a chopper ride, as they were returned to Kamiti Prison.

Interestingly, they were received by top government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his ICT colleague Joe Mucheru.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had placed a Ksh60 million bounty on anyone who would help the police arrest them.

But when asked if the reward would be given, Matiang’i sounded non-committal.

“No! No! No! We are not going there at the moment. Let’s not be speculative about this. We are going to work meticulously as my colleagues have said,” he responded.

The Super CS added that the focus now is to ensure that no other convict escapes from prison.

“The reason why we are here with ICT CS Joe Mucheru is that we have looked at the entire system in this place (Kamiti) and a partnership between us and the ICT Ministry will immediately reconfigure this because there are certain lapses,” he stated.
