Healthworkers to get allowances : The Standard

Health workers will now receive medical emergency allowance and benefits after Salaries and Remuneration Commission approved distribution of funds.

In a letter written to the commission by the Council of Governors and Ministry of Public Service and Gender, both institutions had requested payment of allowances to health workers in National and county governments during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Salaries and Remuneration Commission deliberated on the matter during its special meeting in cognizant of the challenges faced by the healthcare workers and approved Covid-19 medical emergency allowance and benefits for the frontline healthcare workers as estimated to cost Sh 3.3billion for a period of three months with effect from 1st April, 2020, subject to availability of funds,” says the commission.
The ball now lies at the Ministry of Finance where Ambassador Ukur Yattani is expected to direct the release of funds.

“The purpose of this letter therefore, is to present to your office the resultant cost implication of implementing the Covid-19 medical emergency allowance and benefits for frontline healthcare workers in national and county governments for consideration.”
Earlier last month, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua had brushed off SRC for opposing payment of allowance to front-line health workers.
Governor Mutua had pledged to pay health workers a special monthly allowance ranging between Sh5, 000 and Sh20, 000 for the next three months.

SRC had also written to the Council of governors warning them against introducing additional special allowances to healthcare workers without seeking proper advisory from the commission.
According to Mengich awarding of special allowances without seeking advisory from the commission is illegal and is likely to cause inequality across the health sector.
