The horrific murder of fast-rising athlete Agnes Tirop has sent shockwaves through the nation.

The lifeless body of Tirop was found in her Iten home in Elgeyo-Marakwet County on Wednesday morning, October 13.

According to the police, the 25-year-old had been stabbed in both the neck and the abdomen.

Keiyo North police boss Tom Makori said the long-distance athlete’s husband, who was also her coach, is the prime suspect.

“Her husband went missing after the incident. We suspect he went into hiding because he had a hand in her death,” he said.

“Some of the suspect’s family members have informed us that he called and told them he had done something bad and was seeking forgiveness.”

He added that the police would be reviewing the CCTV cameras in her house to track her last moments.

The neighbours disclosed that the two have been having domestic quarrels in the recent past.

It is alleged that he killed her when he went to pick his belongings from her house.

In the just-concluded Tokyo Olympic, she represented Kenya in the 5,000m race.

“Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fast-rising athletes’ giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track,” Kenya Athletics said in a statement.

She was a two-time bronze medalist in the World Athletes Championships.

Tirop was the current record holder of the women’s only 10km race after timing 30:01 at the Roads to Records Race in Germany last month.

In his tribute, President Uhuru Kenyatta said: “It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate and very sad that we’ve lost a young and promising athlete, who at the age of 25 years, she had brought our country so much glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage.”
