Makueni Trade Executive Sonia Nzilani has died, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has confirmed.

Police say she was found dead in her home in Makindu on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

Her passing came on the same day she was scheduled to preside over several community events, including an environmental awareness initiative.

Authorities say her body has been taken to the mortuary as investigations continue and an autopsy is awaited.

Community in Shock

Nzilani’s sudden death has left friends, colleagues, and the wider Makueni community deeply shaken.

Tributes have flooded social media, with many remembering her as a dedicated leader who served as the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism.

Just a day before her death, Nzilani had shared a poster for an event at Kilumilo Primary School in Mtito Andei, planned for the very Saturday she passed away, a detail that has further shocked those who interacted with her last.

Governor Mutula’s Tribute

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. praised Nzilani as an accomplished environmentalist and a strong advocate for tree planting.

Her passion earned her the affectionate nickname “Syomiti,” reflecting her deep commitment to environmental conservation.

He added that the county government will share further information as it becomes available and urged the public to respect the family’s privacy during the mourning period.

A Public Figure Who Faced Controversy

Nzilani gained national attention earlier in the year after making controversial remarks linking a girl’s death to her menstrual cycle, comments that led to a 45-day suspension.

Experts dismissed the claim as scientifically baseless, and Nzilani later issued a public apology.

Public Reaction

News of her death spread quickly across the country, with Kenyans expressing sadness, shock, and condolences.

Many remembered her dedication to public service, her environmental work, and her strong presence in community programs.
