Manhunt for KMTC escapees underway, President Kenyatta

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that a manhunt for individuals who escaped from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) quarantine centre on Tuesday is underway.

Speaking at State House during an interview by KBC Radio Taifa on Wednesday President Kenyatta said the escapees would be taken back to the centre to take the mandatory fourteen days.

“To those who escaped KMTC quarantine centre, we will find you and take you back to complete the mandatory 14-days quarantine period,” he said.

The President urged Kenyans to adhere to Covid-19 measures that have been laid down by the Ministry of Health to stop the further spread of the virus.

On Tuesday, a video was shared on social media showing escapees jumping over KMTC’s perimeter wall where they were in quarantine.

There are fears that they could pose expose Kenyans to Covid-19 as some were waiting for their test results.

While giving an update on the countries Covid-19 status, Chief Administrative Secretary Dr Mercy Mwangangi said that the Health Ministry had received reports of the escape and working to track them down.

“We have activated channels through the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government who are following up on this issue and we will update you once all the information is collected and investigations are undertaken,” said CAS Mwangangi.

She cautioned young people deliberately breaking curfew regulations due to the false beliefs that they cannot catch the disease.

Kenya has now recorded 296 Covid-19 positive cases.
