Veteran vernacular radio journalist Njogu wa Njoroge has been sacked barely a week after he joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of Deputy President William Ruto.
Njogu, who was working with Kameme FM, was told not to report to work this week. The station is owned by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family.
The presenter confirmed that one of his bosses informed him that his contract has been terminated.
“I received a phone call from the Programs Controller, who asked me not to report to work, permanently,” he said.
He claimed that his sacking was cultivated after he joined the ‘Hustler Nation’.
“It is because of my affiliations, nothing else. I would have resigned to go and concentrate on politics,” he said.
Until last week, he was hosting a political show between 9 pm and midnight.
Njogu joined Kameme in 2000 and worked there for years before he was poached by Inooro FM and Gukena FM, respectively. He returned to Kameme in 2019.
Interestingly, the seasoned journalist is a personal friend of President Kenyatta and among the chosen few who can reach him directly.
In the 2013 and 2017 election campaigns, he was one of the coordinators of the Head of State’s political activities in the Mt Kenya region.
He was in charge of caravans that would go around the region to market the Jubilee Party and demonise ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The journalist is an aspirant for the Njoro parliamentary seat. In 2017, he unsuccessfully ran for the same position.
A few weeks ago, there were reports that he would go for the Nakuru senatorial seat under Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
