Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Impeached Amid Political Intimidation Claims

In a dramatic political shake-up, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, leader of the UPA Party and a key supporter of former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, has been officially impeached by the Nyamira County Assembly.

Observers suggest the impeachment may be part of a broader political intimidation campaign targeting leaders aligned with Matiangi.

Repeated Impeachment Attempts

This is the third attempt in two years to remove Governor Nyaribo:

  • In September 2024, he narrowly survived impeachment, falling short of the two-thirds threshold by just one vote.

  • Previous attempts in 2023 cited nine allegations, including abuse of office, irregular recruitment, and mismanagement of county funds.

Allegations Against Nyaribo

The motion, sponsored by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accused Nyaribo of:

  • Gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office

  • Payroll fraud and irregular payments to county staff

  • Unauthorized recruitment of staff without proper assembly approval

However, political analysts suggest that the impeachment may have been politically motivated, given Nyaribo’s visible support for Fred Matiangi and alignment with the security-focused wing of national politics.

Public Participation and Assembly Dynamics

Prior to the vote, the Nyamira County Assembly concluded public participation, allowing residents to give input.

Controversy arose when six MCAs voted by proxy despite being absent, a move that helped achieve the quorum needed for impeachment.

Political Context and Alleged Intimidation

Observers note that Nyaribo’s impeachment comes amid a growing pattern of political pressure on leaders supporting Fred Matiangi.

This has raised concerns about government interference in county politics and the targeting of opposition figures.

Nyaribo has also been under scrutiny for a KSh 382 million tender scandal, though supporters argue the timing of impeachment suggests political motives rather than purely legal ones.

What’s Next

  • The matter could escalate to the Senate, which may investigate the impeachment charges.

  • Legal challenges are expected, especially given the controversial voting procedures and previous failed impeachment attempts.

  • The political fallout is likely to reshape Nyamira County politics, impacting the UPA Party and the wider national political landscape.
