Raila Speaks on His Presidency, Whether He Will Be In 2027 Race

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has spoken about the length of his presidency if he wins the 2022 General Elections.

According to the Kenyan Constitution, once a President is sworn into office, he or she is allowed to serve a maximum of two terms, each lasting for five years.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Raila stated that one term is enough for him. However, he said that he was not sure of the matter, as he can also decide to be in the race for Presidency in 2027, seeking a second tenure in office.

Raila admitted that he will be turning 76 on January 7, 2022, but age is not a factor when it comes to leadership.

“Fine, so what?” Raila interjected, prompting Ombija to repeat the question, this time asking him if he will be a one-term president.

“Why not? Ask that question to Biden (Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America), he is one year older than me,” the former Premier responded vaguely.

He pointed out that he expected the support of President Uhuru Kenyatta in form of his vote, but not an endorsement, refuting claims by Deputy President William Ruto allies that he is a project of the deep state.

“I’d say I don’t want his endorsement, I only want his vote. I do not want to be seen as a project, I want to run as Raila Odinga, but if he offers me his vote, I will be very grateful,”

When asked his choice of running mate, the ODM Presidential candidate noted that it was too early to discuss the issue.

Raila further urged Kenyans that he is the ideal candidate since he is an experienced engineer, and it is the perfect time for an engineer to hold the helm of the office to steer developments in the country.

“We need an engineer to enable the country to take off so that Kenya can leapfrog and catch up with the countries that were at the same stage of development with Kenya in 1963,” the former Prime Minister remarked.

He said that the country has been in the hands of anthropologist Jomo Kenyatta, teacher Daniel Moi, economist Mwai Kibaki and political economist Uhuru Kenyatta and it is now the turn of a machinist.
