The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has opposed plans by government to re-open schools amidst COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the press Sossion said the taskforce was not properly constituted in that it excluded teachers who he termed as key stakeholders in education sector.
He said exclusion of teachers was the taskforce’s main undoing saying the union stood by the principle that life was more sacred than education.
He said both teachers and learners were to remain in their homes till the Health Ministry issues a conclusive statement on the state of the nation regarding the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic.
“No parent in his right mind would allow children go back to school to get sick and die of Coronavirus disease,” he said.
“Learning will carry on at any time even a year from now but it is not prudent for Education Ministry to purport to know when to reopen schools when the Government is still fighting Covid-19,” said the KNUT boss.
He told teachers to shun any directive to report to their respective institutions till the country has completely got rid of covid-19 disease.
