What You Need to Know About Doris Petra, First Female FKF President

Following the resignation of embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa on November 30th, his Vice President Doris Petra is set to occupy the top office.

Doris was unknown to many before Mwendwa penned her name on the resignation letter tasking her with all responsibilities of FKF President as stated in its constitution.

She makes history as being the first woman to occupy the pinnacle post at the federation.

Doris has been the Vice President of FKF since 2016 and her responsibilities entailed initiating projects before presenting them to the National Executive Committee for enactment.

Before joining FKF, the mother of six used to work as an untrained teacher at Thur Dibuoro Secondary School in Nyakach before joining Kenya Posts and Telecommunication, now Telkom, from 1989 to 2005 when she was retrenched.

A lover of sports, especially football, Doris is known for advocating for the rights of athletes in the country and establishing the National Women’s team comprising ingrained management and an accomplished technical team.

In 2013, her efforts to see a well-established football system in the country were recognized as she was awarded the Kenya Premier League award to celebrate her attainment in the sports realm.

She was a member of the National Executive committee when Sam Nyamweya was the FKF President between 2011 and 2015 before becoming the first female Deputy President of the body when Nick Mwendwa transitioned into Presidency in 2016.

Talking about her career experiences, Doris noted that working with men is always a hard task as one has to perform parallel with their egos to minimize friction while at work.

“Working with men is not easy therefore you have to accept to work with them without infringing their egos. You have to be good at what you do without excuses and strive to remain on top of your game,” she stated.

On her secret to success, she said: “I always pray a lot and never give up. I believe in falling and standing up for what I believe in. Apart from being disciplined and hardworking, you have to be a vigilant team player.”
