The government has put on hold the extension of the standard gauge railway line from Naivasha to Kisumu as it seeks favorable financing terms with lenders.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has told KBC Channel 1 that the focus will now be towards reviving the old meter gauge line to enhance the movement of goods from the dry Port of Naivasha to Western Kenya and other East African countries.
Macharia says revamping the meter gauge railway would cost 40 billion shillings while constructing the SGR line between Naivasha and Malaba via Kisumu would cost 400 billion shillings.
Macharia has further said that the much awaited Bus Rapid Transit system in Nairobi will be unveiled in June this year with the first two buses expected in Nairobi next month from South Africa.
